Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age by July of this year
- You must be capable of performing all required functions of the trade. In order to do so,
physical strength and agility are very important.
- Mechanical, mathematics and space visualization ability are also important.
- Drug free ironworker.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma / GED
- (2) Full-face 2x2 photos passport size.
- Proof of residency in NY (such as rent receipts, utility bills, bank statements) (Picture ID
must match address on bills). NO P.O.Boxes accented.
- Proof of citizenship or permanent authorization to work in the United States.
- Birth certificate or passport, and driver's license.
- If selected for the program, you will be required to take and pass a medical examination,
including drug testing and a test to determine that you have no fear of heights.
How do I become an apprentice?
Local 580 uses direct entry programs. Here is a list of direct entry programs you can apply to:

Upon acceptance to a direct entry program:
- The programs are about 4 to 5 weeks long.
- Classes consist of math, safety, OSHA-30, site safety training classes, unionism,
leadership and more.
- Attendance and attitude are very critical.
- After completion of either program, they will refer you to the trades of your choosing.
- If you are not accepted into one of the programs, you will not be eligible to join Local 580.
Local 580 Interview:
- You will be given a date for your interview.
- Math test (basic math)
- Local 580 selection process.
